WHY IS A SPRAY PARK NEEDED IN NELSON?
The existing wading pool at Lion's Park has been closed because of liability concerns. The pool is scheduled for demolition during the fall of 2005
Construction of a spray park will provide a safe, colorful and attractive playground facility for the families of Nelson and area. The spray park is a low maintenance, environmentally friendly project that will be available to children of all abilities and financial means.
Construction of the spray park will provide a safe healthy outdoor water recreation option from late spring until early fall. This type of facility is not currently available in Nelson. Gyro Pool is only open during July and August.
WHAT DOES A FACILITY LIKE THIS COST?
A project like this can cost between $75,000 and $500,000 depending on the size and number of fixtures that are installed. The project proposed for Lions Park will utilize the land currently allocated to the wading pool and the cost is estimated to be $115,000.
CAN THE LION'S CLUB RAISE ALL THE FUNDS NECESSARY TO CONSTRUCT THIS PROJECT?
No. This project will require help from the community to make it happen. The Nelson Lion's Club is planning to allocate a significant percentage of their annual fund raising to this project but also needs to ensure funds remain to assist families and individuals who require emergency help. The club is also planning additional fund raising activities dedicated to the Spray Park project.

PROJECT TIMELINE
We hope to start construction in the fall of 2006. This is largely dependent on the success of fund raising activities. A key component of funding is our application for a Provincial Direct Access Program Grant. We hope to have a decision about this application in the spring of 2006. If we do not raise sufficient funds we will consider delaying construction until 2007 and work to raise the additional funds needed.
FUND RAISING UPDATE
- February 2006 $37,000 raised or committed.
